While fewer new boats are being built because of the downturn in the economy, it seems many boat owners are holding on to their boats and giving them a facelift instead of upgrading to a newer or larger model.

Shayne's wife Kim, who is an interior designer said the Orakei Marina-based boat had “seen better days” and its new owner wanted it refitted. That’s when Kim teamed up with husband Shayne, who owns automotive and marine upholstery business Master Trim.

Kim coordinated the new colour scheme which included selecting new upholstery, carpet and soft furnishings, and Shayne undertook the work of reupholstering the squabs, a new dash cowling and fitting the new carpet.

“The rest of the boat was in pretty good condition, it had good bones,” said Shayne. “It just needed a bit of a makeover.”

The end result is a boat with a fresh new look, a modernised interior, and one the client is very happy with.
